Miguel Ferrer: “My passion for events and shows, as well as my dedication, were the things that led me to become CFO”.
Of the 15 years that WORKOUT events has been in the market, Miguel Ferrer has been present for the last 14 years, during which he has experienced firsthand the implementation of new departments, the creation of jobs, the territorial expansion of the company and the launching of many events and shows.
At WORKOUT I have been able to combine my passions, that is to say, I have been able to combine the area of finance with the areas of events and shows.
Both logical and creative, both shy and witty, as incompatible as it may seem, Miguel Ferrer shows us that the logic of the right hemisphere harmonizes perfectly with the artistic side of the left hemisphere.
His professional history goes back to when he decided to study the career of “Business Administration and Management” which he studied as a wildcard career because he was not 100% sure of his choice and because it was the career that had the most professional opportunities.
Once in college, which he attended in the afternoons, his artistic side and his taste for music emerged and led him to study in the mornings a course in show production at the “Center of entertainment technology”.to participate in workshops and form part of theater companies.
When she finished her degree, she knew that what she liked most about it was the marketing area, so she started a master’s degree in marketing and communication.
After finishing his studies, he worked in different companies and in different departments, to mention a few: Communications Dept. of El Corte Inglés and Risk Analysis Dept. of BNP Bank. He also collaborated as teacher at the Center for Entertainment Technologygiving classes of marketing applied to the performing artsThe collaboration was maintained for 10 years.
How did you come to WORKOUT?
While working at BNP bank, in an informal chat he shared his tastes and studies with a colleague, the same who told him about a newly created position in a small company, in which he could apply all his knowledge. This aroused Miguel’s curiosity and without hesitation, he asked for an interview with the founders of WORKOUT… And what happened?
At 27 years old, he thought he had nothing to lose and decided to take the risk, to change a large company for a startup that was just starting and which only consisted of 6 employees, already counting on him.
“I was inspired to see the commitment that the bosses put into their work, always arriving first and leaving last.”
During the first years, he worked not only in the financial area of WORKOUT, but also in IT, purchasing, communication, labor management, etc.
“I never worked in the operational area.
I love being in the office, I could even say that I am part of the furniture. But if I had to be in operations, I would like to be on the technical side, especially event lighting.
I like to see how the lighting and set design is done!”.
As in any small business, Miguel had to adapt and work in whatever was needed in the office, and although he loves events, he prefers to be behind the scenes, in the “Management”.
“What motivates me the most is knowing that my work contributes to the mounting of great shows and events in which we are present.
Miguel Ferrer currently heads the “Financial Department” of WORKOUT, which is made up of a team of 6 people and which is in crescendo.
Let’s get to know the premises that have marked Miguel Ferrer’s path in the world of finance, shows and events.
Practically, besides “Director” you are the “Founder” of the finance department of WORKOUT EVENTS. During these 14 years, what do you consider to have been the strengths that have led you to be where you are?
- Undoubtedly, Capacity for work!
- Faith! There have been very hard years, so another indispensable thing is to believe in what you do.
- Passion is something that cannot be missing in this equation, I love knowing that I am part of the events and shows we participate in!
- In order to grow, it is essential to invest time. Learning and taking projects forward involves many hours and even more when you are in a growing SME.
- To stop at nothing, to have the initiative to learn, to undertake, to research, to train, to initiate projects and to take small risks. If you don’t know how to do it, look it up!
- To new proposals I always say “OK”, I only say “No” when time is short.
- And like everything in life, luck plays a minimal role, to achieve success one must be constant, hardworking and make circumstances play in your favor.
As Director of WORKOUT’s Finance Department, what is your next goal and how do you plan to achieve it?
Due to the position and the area I manage, my objectives in WORKOUT must be closely linked to the global objectives of the company’s management.
As you know, everything in this life can be improved and at WORKOUT we have areas of opportunity that we need to work on in order to forge a solid company and achieve constant growth.
As far as my department is concerned, having so little turnover makes it easier to refine processes and achieve continuous improvement.
In the end, the common goal is to provide quality service from beginning to end of the entire process.
On a professional level, what characteristics do you value most in the people around you?
I ask the same as I demand of myself:
- Commitment
- Willingness to work
- Initiative and that the person is able to bring a personal touch to the job.
- Capacity for creation and self-learning.
- That they are curious, that they do not stop training.
Doing something you love once a day gives you the energy you need to do those things you don’t like so much . What gives you that energy in your life?
Listening to music is something I can combine with what takes up my time.
I can do it while I work, while I exercise, when I sleep, when I take care of my daughter and on my commute. I am passionate about music. I could not live without it!
If I had more time, I would DJ more and dedicate myself more to the world of electronic music events and shows. I would also love to learn to play the piano and drums.
We want to know more about Miguel Ferrer. In a word, how would you define your past, present and future?
- Past – Work
- Present – Stability
- Future – Family
I say What does …mean to you? and you answer me with the first phrase or word that comes to your mind.
- Commitment: Success
- Teamwork: WORKOUT
- Living: Happiness
- Partnership: An important way to achieve objectives.
- Success: As I say in the first word… you don’t get there without commitment and without believing in what you do.
- Punctuality: Always, I am extremely punctual, I resent unpunctuality for more and for less, especially in a professional manner.
Which would you say is your … favorite?
- Movie: There was a time when I was a cinephile, and I couldn’t really tell you a movie, but a couple of directors: Tarantino and Martin Scorsese.
- Book: Any book you can learn from! I would rather read a book about the stock market than a novel. Although I have to say that there is a book that I liked recently “The Truth About the Harry Quebert Case” by Joël Dicker.
- Word: Yes! NO” always sounds bad.
- Hobby: Music
- Music: Everything but reggaeton, but the music I’m passionate about is electronic music, mainly Techno.
- Artist or group: Oscar Mulero (Techno dj) and Vetusta Morla
- Food: Fish, and if it’s on the beach… even better!
And to close with a flourish, what would be the slogan or phrase that most identifies you? And why?
I once read a book called “Good Luck” by Alex Rovira.
It is a self-help book that tells you about keys to prosperity. This book compares two people of similar class, but with different circumstances. The phrase I read in this book became a precept and an axiom in my life:
“Good luck does not exist, it is self-created.”
Why?
I believe that one is capable of creating situations in one’s life. We must know how to condition the circumstances so that they go in our favor.
